Vocal cord tumors can be benign (nodules, papillomas, polyps) or malignant (laryngeal cancer) and require specialized surgical intervention. Early-stage tumors can often be removed using microlaryngeal surgery or laser excision, while advanced cases may need partial or total laryngectomy (removal of part or all of the voice box). Surgical techniques include: Transoral laser microsurgery (TLM): A minimally invasive approach using a laser to remove tumors while preserving healthy vocal tissue. Endoscopic resection: For localized tumors, ensuring minimal damage to surrounding structures. Partial laryngectomy: For larger tumors that still allow partial voice preservation. Total laryngectomy: For extensive cancers, requiring alternative methods of voice restoration like tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) or esophageal speech. After surgery, patients may need radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and speech rehabilitation to regain communication abilities.
